DRUM
CORPS COMMENTARY
by Harvey
Berish
World
Open Special
"BRIDGEPORT BUCCANEERS: Of St Raphaels Church pulled a
sneak surprise in the Prelims (and Finals) by beating St
Kevins...and their show this year is certainly an appealing one...and
having watched Skipper, their drum major for many years I can sort of
say I grew up with this corps...this is their best year, and I
thought their ides and show a vast improvement...Dave Kwantz is the corps
Rudimental Pirate Bass Drummer and he is a show in himself. The
corps concert of "Saber Dance" is unbelievable as it has to be heard to
be appreciated."
*THE 1965 FLEETWOOD
WORLD OPEN RECORDIING.*
Ray
Samora & Dick Blake were recording the Finals of the 1965 World Open, while
St. Raphael's Buccaneers
were performing, the Fleetwood recording
machine "ceased to function". As a result, there was no recording
of St. Raphael's from the WO Finals.
(They DID manage to fix the device, and were able to record the Casper
Troopers and Boston
Crusaders).
A plan for St. Raphael's to do their
show over fell apart, as the stadium custodians wanted the lights turned
offright after retreat. The recording of
the Buccaneers, that DOES appear on the World Open 1965 albums,
is
from the exhibition program, held in the
very same stadium on opening night, May 25,
1965.
