My daughter, Cheri, will once again be riding in the MS 150 Bike Ride in FL. I am asking for you to support her in this effort to help fight a disease that affects several of our Buccaneer brothers and sisters - this is who she rides for - these are the people she wants to help.

Her message is below - it is sincere - please consider sponsoring her in some way.

Thanks,

Hi everyone,

Last year I participated in the MS 150 Bike Ride from Tampa to Orlando and back. My friends that deal with MS on a daily basis are my motivation and riding 150 miles is the least I can do for them to help find a cure. I will be participating in the 2007 MS 150 Bike Ride on April 21 & 22. Last year you helped me raise over $1600. I hope you will consider doing the same this year. Below you will see a link to my personal page where you may e-pledge or mail any pledges to:

~~ HELLO ~~

Do you remember being a kid in drum and bugle corps?
Do you remember it being fun, exciting, daring, adventurous, the sneaking around, being away from your parents, the practices, the competitions, the bus rides, Seaside Park, the Armory and the friendships?
Today, many of you still hold onto those friendships.

Well, TODAY -- after an absence of over 30 years, junior drum and bugle corps IS BACK in Bridgeport.
Through the Bridgeport PAL, we now have the:
The PAL BUCCANEERS junior drum and bugle corps.

"the black and gold continues"
*see our black and gold uniforms*

The directors for the corps are past BUCS-
Mike Marella and Carl Rodia.
We also have a hard working Advisory Board along with great parents.
The children/members are committed to making this corps work. They were in a few parades, performed at a sporting event in Southington, CT., and will perform at the opening of Christmas Village
(203-576-7604) on Sunday, December 4th.
We are having a fundraiser on Saturday, November 12th, 2005 and we hope that you can join us.
Please see the invitation below.
( FOOD and DESSERTS will be plenty)
You will also meet our children-as they will be your servers. ( do you remember serving at your dinners?)

Hi,
I had to send this email to thank all of the Buccaneers Alumni who attended the reunion dinner last night. I have never seen such a great group of people who care so much for each other and for the future of the new PALBUCCNEERS Drum & Bugle Corps. Your generosity and overall concern for the new Bucs is over whelming. I realize that you all understand and can easily relate to the amount of money and time it takes to get a corp up and working. You were there once yourselves and it shows in the way you reacted by attending the dinner or if unable to make it, the generous donations and gifts you gave from the heart.
My granddaughter, Ashley, was so impressed with the warmth shown to her last night. She had a great time and was able to see first hand how the corp becomes a family. Ashley is currently the color guard captain for the new Bucs and she loves every minute of it. She works very hard to perfect herself and does the best she can for the corp. She spoke to many of you last night and learned quite a bit about drum corp life in the past and hopefully she can instill this in the future corps. Mike Marella and Carl Rodia have done such a wonderfull job in organizing the new Bucs and my hat goes off to them. Jack Sullivan and Dennis Banks are doing such a great job in teaching the kids drill. There are many other people who contribute to teaching the music, drums twice a week. They unselfishly give their time and efforts to help insure the success of this new corp. The ladies like Helen Rodia, Judy Marella, Linda Trotten-Shelby and AmyMarie have done so much to further the Bucss and I thank them.
I again want to extend my thanks to all of you. You are making Ashley's dream come true and as a grandmother I couldn't ask for anything more. I am so very proud of all of you and especially of Ashley, she will make you all proud as will all the kids in the new jr. corp, they are a great bunch of kids.
Sincerely and fondly,

JOANNE COPIDA

Hi,
I'm Anthony Donnelly, Jim Donnelly's little brother (not so little any more). If you don't know him, he was a snare drummer in St. Raphaels Golden Buccaneers 61' to 63' and the Hurricanes 66' to 70'. I tagged along to rehearsals and contests being 10 years younger than him and was called "Little Donnelly"

Recently, at the end of April, my brother met up with some of the guy's he competed with, and stories of Father Louie DeProfio were tossed around with Moose, Mike Barenowski, Malvin Clayburn and others, and it inspired me to take on a project about Father DeProfio starting the Golden Buc's and stories about the beginnings of the corp, kind of a "Going My Way" of drum corp. I was also surprised to here that Father D. was into Saint Don Bosco, and the work he did with getting kids off the streets, since Don Bosco is a long time favorite of mine. So they suggested to me to get in touch with Father DeProfio for an interview.

My intention is to get as many stories as I can to put in book form and donate most of the proceeds of the book (minus expenses for publishing) to junior start-up corps in Connecticut or the tri-state area. With some of the contacts I have here in Toronto (Canada), and others in N.Y. and Calif. could possibly get a screenplay looked at. This would not only be a great tribute to Father DeProfio, but possibly and opportunity to raise some money for kids.

So if any of you have a story to tell, and I hope that all of you do, please email me your thoughts, feelings, experiences, humorus, political, whatever, about Father Louie and other experiences in the Buc's. I also might be out for the Barnum Festval to try to connect with some of you. Thanks, Sincerely, Anthony Donnelly

Ray Samora:

Ray Samora, the founder of Fleetwood Records, Drum Corps News and the World Open Championships passed away on 03 February 2005.

Mr Samora was a true "emprasarrio" in the drum & bugle corps arena, with his recording business featuring both "Concert & Competition" pressings and series of winter contests and concerts.

He launched the "Evening With Corps at Carnagie Hall" series (at which St Raphaels appeared in 1963 the only Connecticut junior corps to ever do so) as well as "indie" shows such as the "Danny Thomas Invitational" and senior "World Open Championships".

Drum Corps News also sponsored the "Eastern States Championships" of mid winter standstiil contests in 1962 (Cartoons of which appear on this website)and the "Symphony Hall Evenings" shows held in Newark NJ.

He recently re-launced Fleetwood as a compact disc enterprise showcasing many of the old Drum Corps albums from the 1950s, 60s & 70s on CDs.

He will be missed. Our condolences to the family.

Actually, it was a VERY mild protest. The Buccaneers remained in "block" formation, played themselves off the "Finale-Retreat" assembly of units properly saluting all the other competitors as they passed in review.

This "protest" was extremly mild when compared to some of the "End Of Season" retreat blowups/walkoffs in 1966, (not counting the "sit in" by the Reveries at VFW) the most memorable of which was at the American Legion Nationals in Washington DC.

Being it’s impossible to make Sunday morning & Thursday night baritone practice each week because of the miles. Myself a few others felt a little lost musically, so some of the guys suggested that I should contact you to see if you or someone would record the following II-III baritone parts for Walk Alone, Taste of Honey, How the West was Won . Placing the audio out on the PCP web site would be very helpful not only to me but to the rest of the baritone section, so if some people have to travel or just can’t make it to the rehearsals. They an myself will not be musically challenged.

This would be a great help.

There will be a Park City Pride float volunteer's meeting this Wednesday 7:00 PM at Christmas Village. We will review our plans and begin to delegate work that will lead to the creation of the parade float.

We will be able to have access to the airplane hangar at the Bridgeport Airport right after Easter. So our next meeting will likely be there as we gather materials and start assembling fixtures, the superstructure and planning the signage and coloring.

Please arrive by 7:00. I expect the meeting will take about an hour.

Kind regards,

Our membership is comprised of many people in their 50's and 60's. The old route offered tree-lined streets that provided shade in a neighborhood environment instead of questionable commercial areas. Also, the new route has increased the distance considerably (double the length of the old). We are scheduled to perform (along with other drum corps) that evening at the "Parade of Champions". The Golden Buccaneers Alumni Association

A Golden Buccaneer’s Alumni Association will be formed in the spring of 2004. Its purpose will be to carry on the traditions of the corps, to preserve its history and conserve its memorabilia. But most importantly The Association will provide a friendly and consistent networking resource for all past corps members and their families.

We are planning an inaugural meeting of The Association for late April or early May of 2004. That meeting will be mostly organizational in nature. But soon thereafter a Buccaneer corps reunion, the first one since 1983, will be on the table as a project for late this year or early 2005.

We invite anyone who is interested in The Golden Buccaneers Alumni Association to contact us at 203-452-9652 or contact Carl by E-mail at carlrodia@yahoo.com to express interest or to obtain additional information.
Sincerely,

I posted on the PAL guestbook if perhaps all the corps patches (including a PRIDE patch) could be duplicated as a set (150 min of each), then we would have an attractive wall art/collectible momento of our experience. There could be additional patches made for jacket use, etc. which could help defray the additional design costs involved in making them all. A "commemorative display set" for approx. $30 Member cost. It may be worth considering and brought up before all members next full rehearsal. On another note, Thursday night was stage 2 of our sentimental journey...we played with DRUMS for the first time!!! AND, I'll admit it, blew my lip out. (not the first time nor will it be the last) Looking forward to phase 3, marching with color guard!!

On the PAL website guest book it is said that corps patches can be made for $3.00 apiece with a minimum order of 150. It looks like the old PAL patch might be duplicated. Perhaps the Bucc'c can get a Buccaneer's Alumni patch made and/or a "Pride" patch for our Pride jackets with all the corps names on it ? I would certainly buy both.

Greetings Park City Pride!

Everything is set for our first major rehearsal tomorrow afternoon at The Christmas Village (1 PM - 5PM). Please be there by 12:45 PM so we can all get set up and start the rehearsal promptly at 1 PM.

Mike Marella has arranged for Bridgeport Mayor and former Golden Buccaneer, John Fabrizi, to stop by to help make the occasion even more auspicious.

We have lots of corps business to conduct as well but will endeavor to take care of that during break time.

The PAL organization has graciously made this facility available to The Park City Pride for these rehearsals. Please respect the premises. No smoking is allowed anywhere inside the building complex and the consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the property. The PAL concession stand will be open. Hot food, snacks and soft drinks will be available all afternoon.

Best regards,
Bill Duquette and Carl Rodia

Sorry Tracys, CAN'T make practice at your house this Wednesday night. It was GOOD to see so many BUCCANEERS as well asother corps members, I hope it keep progressing as we get closer to REAL PRACTICE. I know because I spent many days there along with others from the Troubadors. Our corps director even gave us the paint to paint "our rock". Bucs rock was the one in front of the bath house. Troubador rock was further to the left. Ask Roger O'Toole....when he was dating someone from the Troubadors, he spent much time "under the blankets" at Troubador Rock. In 1965 at the end of the World Open I decided that day “that I am somebody". As a young 13 year old along with my fellow Musketeers, we not only reached our dream of becoming a Buccaneer but also did it in style that created the new Buccaneer sound.

After listening to some of the recordings over the years that are on the site I am very proud to say that the boys from the hollow (who use to practice by themselves in Steve Aliberti's garage in the winter cold) where very much a self-taught group. Steve, Dave Convertito, Mike D'Aulizio, John Varone, Mike Smegalino and myself had played together from 62 until we moved up 65. we simply considers ourselves to be the best soprano line in the country as young as we may have been. But more importanly, Attidude, yes Attidude is what we really had.

While life has brought many successes to me, I still consider those few moments back in 65 as the foundation of my attitude in life. A dream, hard work and no matter the challenges ............ all can be achieved!

I salute all who contributed to who I am today. Jack Sullivan who cared for me in a special way, my boyhood role models, Artie Delally, Sac, Cliff Richmond and Dennis Banks. A special thanks to Mr. Padua and the many parents who devoted endless hours to helping us.

I only realized how much I loved the Bucc's ……….. until after they where gone.

I look forward to seeing many of you again.

Sam and Bill…what a fantastic website! …A few nights ago while on the Internet, I stumbled onto past history and great memories of old when seeing the Bridgeport PAL website. Further surfing,
I came upon the Buccaneer’s site ..a vivid remembrance of fun, work, sweat, great friendships,
and travel, in which, a kid from Bridgeport could only of dreamed at that time.

I was a member of St. Raphael’s Buccaneer’s from (’57 to ’64), played soprano and was their soprano soloist in some of those year’s (~’61 to ’64). Taught by maestro’s (Jim Donnelly, Dave Mintell, Fred Cartwright and Joe Genero), I played with and next to some of the best (Marella, McDonald, Najamy, Art Delally, Cliff Richmond, Dennis Banks, Tony Sac and many others). Who could forget Skippy Gallant, the Carnegie Hall performance, our fantastic drum line and color guard, and the sweat and work of most summer evenings at Seaside park with Jack Sullivan. Heck…who could forget the wonderful aroma of low tide and the dump(-: I about dropped my glasses when I saw a photo of Cliff and I playing a solo at a major competition in ’64..almost 40 years ago!

Sam and Bill: Congratulations to you both! What a trip down memory lane..I would certainly like to hear from some of the old Buc’s gang (guys and girls) and PAL gang. God willing, I’ll
see you “gentlemen” in Bridgeport in 2004…

While there is a TON of Logitsics (a 'uniform', music, practice sites & dates, etc)to be worked out, the project is a definite "GO":)) Points of contact are: judigordo@aol.com & billduq@bellsouth.net

Please contact any St Rapahel's, Bpridgeport PAL Cadets, St Anne's Loyalaire, Connecticut Royal Lancers etc, alums that you are aware of and inform them of the proposed "Reunion" parade corps.

This is an absoultly wonderfull chance for all of the "olde tymmers" many of whom are now Grandparents, (like me) from the 'Glory Days' of Bridgeport junior drum corps to get together and "Do It One Last Time" in the 'Park City'.

Please watch this website, and that of the Bridgeport PAL Cadets www.palcadets.org for any updates.

Over the Labor Day wekend, Vince Bruni Past President of DCA, past director of the two time Legion Champion Rochester Crusaders and Founder-Director of the many times DCA Champion Empire Statesmen died.

Now comes word that Mickey Petrone President of DCA has died, less than 24 hours after a testimonial honoring his seven decades of service to the drum corps activity.

Mr Petrone was Director of St Vincents Cadets and led them to 13 National Championships in the American Legion and VFW. He, along with Jim Donnelly and Vinny Cerbonne led "modern" junior drum corps into the era of the 1950s and early 1960s.

"Mickey" was drill innstructor for St Vincents, the Newark Woodsiders, St Lucys Cadets, Blessed Sacrament and the Ballantine Brewers, as well as a marching and manuvering judge for several juding associations.

Great website and great photos. I definitely remember the Golden Bucs, as well as PAL, and all the great corps from Bridgeport. I played snare drum for the Auburn Noteables, from Auburn, Mass. We competed in the Yankee Circuit and in the Mayflower Circuit as well as in some Eastern Mass. and open contests. In the Yankee Circuit, we won the Class B Championship for the two years we were in Class B: 1961 and 1962. From 1963 onwards, we were entirely in Class A in all circuits. I remember the first time we saw St. Raphael's. It was in 1960. The Bucs took 1st in that contest, and, to us, who were only kids in our first year in M&M (in 6-8 minute class), you guys were giants, in performance quality as well as in physical size. You gave us something to strive for. To this day, I always enjoy listening to old recordings of St. Raphael's. Nothing like the Connecticut style drumming that both St. Raphael's and Bridgeport PAL excelled at. Indirectly, our drum line was an Earl Sturtze product, like so many of the great Connecticut drum lines, as his son, Earl Jr. was our first drum instuctor (1959-1961).

Thanks for the great web site. I was one of the rudimental bass drummers for the O.L.P.H. Ridgemen 1964 into 1967. Spent many a night on the same field competing along with competing in the individual competitions. Thanks again for the flash back. Those were some great times when there were so many great corps competing.

GREAT JOB!!! "Mr Bill" has done a TERIFFIC job of telling not only a fine story of St Rapahels Buccaneers, but a "mini-history" of the great junior corps that called the "Park City" 'home' in the 1960s. Well done:)) SAM
